Wi-Fi Icon Missing From Taskbar? Fix It

When the Wi-Fi icon vanishes, you cannot quickly see networks or signal strength, even if the internet still works. The icon is usually hidden, or Wi-Fi itself is off, and both are easy to check.

TL;DR / Quick Fix

Quick fix: open Settings, then Personalization, then Taskbar, and make sure the Network icon is on. Then open Settings, then Network and internet, and confirm Wi-Fi is on. If the icon still hides, restart Windows Explorer once. Test it once more after a restart to confirm the fix holds.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the taskbar icon settings. Open Settings, then Personalization, then Taskbar, and look at the system tray icons. Make sure the Network icon is turned on.
  2. Expand the hidden icons tray. Click the small up arrow near the clock. The Wi-Fi icon may be in the hidden tray, and dragging it onto the taskbar keeps it visible.
  3. Confirm Wi-Fi is turned on. Open Settings, then Network and internet, then Wi-Fi, and make sure Wi-Fi is on. If Wi-Fi is off, the icon may hide because there is no wireless connection to show.
  4. Check airplane mode. Make sure airplane mode is off in the same Network settings page or in Quick Settings. Airplane mode turns Wi-Fi off and changes what the tray icon shows.
  5. Restart Windows Explorer. Press Ctrl, Shift, and Esc, find Windows Explorer, right-click it, and choose Restart. The taskbar refreshes and hidden icons often return.
  6. Restart the computer if it still hides. Save your work and restart. A restart clears a stuck taskbar state, and then you can check whether the icon and the connection both return.

What NOT to do

  • Do not reset network settings at the first sign of a missing icon. A reset removes saved networks and passwords, and a hidden icon does not need it.
  • Do not turn off the Wi-Fi adapter to fix the icon. Disabling the adapter stops wireless completely, which is the opposite of what you want.
  • Do not assume the internet is down because the icon is missing. Open a browser and test a page first, because the connection may be fine.
  • Do not install a network tool from a pop-up to restore the icon. Windows already has the setting, and extra tools can change network settings you did not intend.

Frequently asked questions

Is my internet down if the icon is missing?

Not necessarily. Test a web page first. The icon can hide while the connection still works.

Why does the icon change to a globe?

A globe means Windows sees no internet on the current connection. Check the router and cable, then the Wi-Fi network itself.

Can I still connect without the icon?

Yes. Open Settings, then Network and internet, then Wi-Fi, and choose a network from the list there.
