Present on One Screen
You start presenting and the audience sees your notes, your chat, your everything. Second screen only — projector mode — sends slides to the big screen while your laptop keeps the private stuff. One shortcut switches it, and it saves you from the most preventable embarrassment in meetings.

TL;DR / Quick Fix
Quick fix: press Win+P and choose Second screen only to send just the presentation to the projector. Your laptop screen goes dark to the audience while you keep notes privately. Choose Duplicate only when you want both screens to mirror. Test the projector connection before the meeting starts, not during.
Follow these steps
- Press Win+P. The project panel appears with four options: PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, Second screen only. This shortcut works even mid-presentation.
- Choose Second screen only. The projector shows your content; your laptop screen goes dark to the room. Your notes stay yours.
- Know when to Duplicate instead. Duplicate mirrors both screens — useful when you need to see exactly what the audience sees, like during demos.
- Identify your displays first. If the projector shows the wrong content, open display settings and identify your displays so you know which is which.
- Set the projector as the presentation display. In your slideshow app, choose which display presents. PowerPoint lets you pick the projector while keeping presenter view on the laptop.
- Test before the meeting. Connect five minutes early and run Win+P through the modes. Discovering a dead cable with an audience watching is avoidable.

What NOT to do
- Do not present in Extend without knowing it. Your mouse can wander onto the audience screen with private windows in tow.
- Do not forget notifications. Even in Second screen only, a loud notification breaks the spell — enable focus rules first.
- Do not unplug mid-presentation. Windows may revert display modes when cables disconnect — end the show first.
- Do not assume the resolution matches. Set the projector's native resolution or your slides look stretched and fuzzy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Duplicate and Extend?
Duplicate mirrors the same image on both screens; Extend makes them one big desktop. Presentations usually want Second screen only or Duplicate.
Win+P does nothing — why?
Usually no second display is detected. Check the cable and that the projector is on the right input.
Can I keep notes on my laptop while presenting?
Yes — that is exactly what Second screen only plus presenter view does. The audience never sees your notes.
