Fiber Install? What to Expect
The provider promised fiber, and now a technician is coming to your house — what actually happens during the visit? Fiber install day involves running a thin glass cable to your home, mounting the ONT box, and testing the light signal. Knowing the steps helps you prepare the house and ask the right questions. Here is the whole visit, plainly.

TL;DR / Quick Fix
Quick fix: expect the technician to run a fiber cable from the street, mount the ONT box inside near power, and connect your router to it. Clear a path to the entry point, decide the ONT's spot, and allow 2-4 hours. Test speeds in every room before they leave.
Follow these steps
- Clear the entry path. The fiber comes from a pole or underground conduit to your house. Move furniture and clutter away from the expected entry point so the technician can work.
- Choose the ONT location deliberately. It needs power, and ideally sits near where your router will live. A central, elevated router spot beats a closet — think about placement now, not later.
- Expect drilling — one small hole. The fiber enters through a small drilled hole, sealed afterward. Confirm the entry point with the technician before they drill, especially in rentals (get landlord approval first).
- Watch the light test. The technician measures the optical signal strength. Good numbers now prevent mysterious slowdowns later — ask what the reading is and whether it is healthy.
- Connect and test your router. The ONT's Ethernet goes to your router's WAN port. Run speed tests wired and on Wi-Fi before the technician leaves — it is much easier to fix issues while they are there.
- Keep the install paperwork. Note the account details, the ONT's serial, and the support number. If the fiber gets cut by gardening months later, you will want that number fast.

What NOT to do
- Do not schedule the visit when you cannot be home. The technician needs indoor access and your decisions on placement — an empty house means a wasted trip.
- Do not let them mount the ONT somewhere powerless. No outlet, no internet — confirm power at the chosen spot first.
- Do not sign off before testing. Run a speed test in the technician's presence; 'we'll check later' becomes your problem alone.
- Do not cut or staple the fiber cable later. The installed fiber is glass and fragile — treat it more gently than any copper cable you have owned.
Frequently asked questions
How long does fiber installation take?
Typically 2-4 hours for a standard home, longer if the run from the street is complex or the house needs creative routing.
Will they install Wi-Fi too?
They connect and verify the ONT; your router and Wi-Fi setup are usually on you — though many techs will plug in your router as a courtesy.
Is fiber really better than cable?
For most homes yes: symmetrical speeds and lower latency. The install visit is the price of admission.
