Find People in Photos

You want every photo of your daughter, and scrolling through 40,000 images is not a plan. The Mac Photos app detects faces automatically and groups them in the People album — name a face once, and every photo of that person becomes searchable. It runs entirely on your Mac, and most people never open it.

A person browsing the real People album in the Mac Photos app with legible face thumbnails, the person's face delighted, bright home office. No black.

TL;DR / Quick Fix

Quick fix: Mac Photos groups faces into the People album automatically — open Photos, click People, and browse. Name the faces, merge duplicates, and mark favorites; search then finds 'Maria beach 2022' instantly. All on-device for privacy. Give it time after a big import — face scanning is not instant.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the People album. In Photos on Mac, click People in the sidebar. Faces Photos has detected appear here — the more photos, the more faces.
  2. Name the key people. Click a face, click Add Name, type it. Start with family and close friends — ten named people cover most of anyone's library.
  3. Merge duplicates. The same person often appears as two faces (sunglasses, age, lighting). Select both, right-click > Merge. Clean merges make search dramatically better.
  4. Mark favorites. Favorite the people you search most — they pin to the top. Your kids, your partner, yourself: the faces you will look up weekly.
  5. Search naturally. The search bar now understands Maria beach or Dad 2021. Combine people with places, dates, and scenes — this is where the naming pays off.
  6. Let it finish scanning. After importing thousands of photos, face detection runs in the background for hours or days (faster when plugged in). An empty People album right after import is normal — wait.

What NOT to do

  • Do not name every stranger. Naming background faces clutters search — name the people you actually look for, ignore the rest.
  • Do not expect perfection on babies and lookalikes. Young children's changing faces and similar-looking relatives confuse the system — manual merges fix it.
  • Do not disable it for privacy panic. Face detection runs entirely on-device; Apple does not see your People album. The privacy cost is essentially zero.
  • Do not forget it syncs. Named faces sync via iCloud Photos to your iPhone and iPad — name once, search everywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Why is someone missing from People?

Too few photos, always in groups, or face obscured. The system needs several clear face shots — add more photos of them and wait for a rescan.

Can I remove a face?

Yes — right-click the person and remove. Useful for exes, one-time group photos, and anyone you would rather not see in the album.

Does it work on pets?

Yes — Photos detects cats and dogs too, in the same People album. Name the pets and they become searchable like family.
