Turn Off Read Receipts
Those blue ticks and 'Seen' labels create pressure to reply instantly — and tell senders exactly when you read their message. Every major app lets you switch them off. Here is where the toggles live, and what changes socially when you do.

TL;DR / Quick Fix
Read receipts tell senders exactly when you've seen their message, creating pressure to reply instantly. Open your messaging app's privacy settings — WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, and most others have the toggle — and switch them off. Some apps make it mutual: you will stop seeing others' receipts as well.
Follow these steps
- WhatsApp: Settings > Privacy. Switch 'Read receipts' off. Note it stays on for group chats regardless.
- iMessage: Settings > Messages. Switch 'Send Read Receipts' off. You can still enable it per conversation for people who matter.
- Instagram DMs: per-chat settings. Open the chat's details and switch off read receipts for that conversation.
- Email: block remote images. Email read receipts use tracking pixels — the same mechanism covered in the pixel blocking guide.
- Accept the trade-off. Some apps make it mutual: no receipts sent means no receipts received. Decide if that bothers you.
- Tell close contacts if it matters. A quick 'I turned off read receipts, I'm not ignoring you' prevents misunderstandings.

What NOT to do
- Do not expect group chats to honor it everywhere. Some apps always show group read status — check per app.
- Do not confuse read receipts with delivery ticks. 'Delivered' and 'seen' are separate indicators with separate toggles.
- Do not use 'last seen' hiding as a substitute. Online status and read receipts are different signals.
- Do not feel guilty about the boundary. Turning off receipts is normal, common, and not rude.
Frequently asked questions
Can people still tell I am online?
Possibly — online/last-seen status is separate from read receipts and has its own toggle.
Why do some apps force receipts in groups?
Design choice. WhatsApp, for example, keeps group receipts on even when DMs are off.
Will turning it off affect delivery?
No. Messages arrive exactly as before — only the 'seen' signal disappears.
