Log In with Fingerprint
Your laptop has a fingerprint reader you have never used, and you still type the password every morning. One finger tap replaces all that typing — faster, and nobody can shoulder-surf a fingerprint. Setup takes two minutes if the reader is already there.

TL;DR / Quick Fix
Quick fix: open Settings, Accounts, Sign-in options, and choose Fingerprint under Windows Hello. Set the Hello PIN first if asked, then tap the reader repeatedly to enroll. Use the finger you naturally unlock with. If the reader misbehaves, the troubleshooting steps usually trace to drivers or a dirty sensor.
Follow these steps
- Open Sign-in options. Go to Settings, Accounts, Sign-in options. Fingerprint lives under the Windows Hello section.
- Set the PIN first. Hello needs a PIN as backup before biometrics. One minute, and it saves you when the reader fails — see sign-in options for the full menu.
- Enroll your fingerprint. Choose Fingerprint, then tap and lift your finger on the reader repeatedly. Vary the angle slightly — edges matter.
- Enroll a second finger. Add another finger for when the first is wet, gloved, or injured. Two enrolled fingers prevent lockout frustration.
- Test the lock loop. Press Win+L and unlock with the reader. If it fails after an update, drivers are the usual fix.
- Consider the full Hello setup. Face plus fingerprint plus PIN is the complete package — see the Hello setup guide. Layer the methods for the smoothest logins.

What NOT to do
- Do not enroll with wet or dirty fingers. The reader learns what you show it — enroll clean and dry.
- Do not use the same finger you injure often. If you are a chef or climber, enroll a low-risk finger too.
- Do not skip the PIN. Readers fail; the PIN is the universal fallback — no PIN, no recovery.
- Do not expect it to work through gloves. Capacitive readers need skin contact — the PIN covers gloved days.
Frequently asked questions
How many fingerprints can I add?
Several — enroll the fingers you actually use, plus one backup. More is not better; reliable ones are.
Why does it fail in the morning?
Dry skin or slight swelling overnight. Moisturize or just use the PIN until fingers normalize.
Is my fingerprint stored safely?
Yes — it stays in the device's secure hardware. It never uploads anywhere.
