Spreadsheet Printout Cuts Off Columns? Fix It
A printout cuts off columns when the sheet is wider than the page, and the printer simply drops what does not fit. Setting the print area and fitting to the page width puts every column back on paper.

TL;DR / Quick Fix
Quick fix: open print preview, set the print area to the cells you need, choose landscape if it helps, and set fit to one page wide. Preview again before printing, and repeat the header row on each page. Last, preview again and print to confirm it.
Follow these steps
- Open print preview first. Open print preview before printing anything. The preview shows exactly which columns fall off the page, so you fix the layout instead of wasting paper.
- Set the print area. Select the cells you want to print and set them as the print area. A print area excludes stray formatted cells that widen the sheet for no reason.
- Set fit to one page wide. In page setup, set the sheet to fit to one page wide, with as many pages tall as needed. Fitting wide preserves columns, while fitting tall as well can shrink text too far.
- Switch to landscape if needed. Change the page orientation to landscape when the sheet is wider than it is tall. Landscape gives columns more room without shrinking the text.
- Repeat the header row on each page. Set the header row to repeat on every printed page. Repeated headers keep multi-page printouts readable, so columns make sense on page two and beyond.
- Preview again and print. Preview the result, check every column appears, then print. A second preview catches a column that still falls off after the first fix.

What NOT to do
- Do not print without previewing. A blind print wastes paper and still cuts off the same columns.
- Do not shrink the font to fit columns. Fitting to page width is cleaner than tiny text nobody can read.
- Do not include empty formatted columns in the print area. Stray formatting widens the sheet and pushes real columns off.
- Do not print the whole workbook when you need one sheet. Set the print area to the sheet you actually need.
Frequently asked questions
Why do columns vanish on paper but show on screen?
The screen scrolls wider than a page. Paper has a fixed width, so columns beyond it drop off unless the sheet is fitted.
Does fit to page shrink text too much?
Fitting wide only, with tall pages unlimited, usually keeps text readable. Fitting to a single page both ways shrinks it far more.
What if one column still falls off?
Narrow that column, hide an unneeded column, or switch to landscape, then preview again.
