Wrap Text Around Images

You drop an image into Word and the whole document explodes — paragraphs jump pages, text vanishes behind the photo. The culprit is text wrapping: by default images sit 'in line' like giant text characters. This guide sets wrapping so images stay put and text flows around them.

TL;DR / Quick Fix

Quick fix: click an image in Word, open Layout Options, and choose Square or Tight so text flows around it — In Line with Text is what makes images jump pages. Drag the image where you want it. Use Top and Bottom for full-width images between paragraphs.

Follow these steps

  1. Select the image. Click the image to reveal the Layout Options button — a small icon that appears beside it. This is the wrapping control center.
  2. Choose Square or Tight. Square wraps text in a box around the image; Tight follows its contours. Either one ends the page-jumping chaos of In Line with Text.
  3. Drag the image into place. With wrapping on, the image floats and text reflows around it live. Position it exactly where you want — the text adapts.
  4. Use Top and Bottom for banners. Full-width images between paragraphs want Top and Bottom wrapping — text stops above and resumes below, no awkward side gaps.
  5. Lock the anchor. Each floating image anchors to a paragraph. Lock the anchor so the image stays with its paragraph when text above shifts.
  6. Mind the Excel cousin. Spreadsheets have their own version of this problem — text wrapping in Excel keeps cell contents readable the same way.

What NOT to do

  • Do not leave images In Line with Text in a designed layout. That mode treats a photo like a giant letter — fine for simple docs, chaos for layouts.
  • Do not nudge with spaces and enters. Wrapping and positioning replace all that fragile manual shoving.
  • Do not forget the anchor. An unanchored image drifts when you edit text above it — lock it to its paragraph.
  • Do not overlap images accidentally. Tight wrapping on overlapping images creates unreadable tangles — arrange deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my image keep jumping pages?

It is In Line with Text inside a paragraph that got pushed. Switch to Square wrapping and position it freely.

Can text wrap on both sides?

Yes — Square and Tight wrap on all sides. Use margins in the advanced layout options to add breathing room.

How do I put text ON the image?

Use a text box over the image, or set the image Behind Text. Both are in the same Layout Options menu.
