Use Transparency Mode
Noise cancelling is wonderful until you need to hear the world — a flight announcement, traffic, a colleague's question. Yanking earbuds out forty times a day gets old. Transparency mode is the answer: the same microphones that cancel noise pipe the outside world back in. Learn the ANC behind it to use both well.

TL;DR / Quick Fix
Quick fix: switch to transparency mode when you need to hear the world — it pipes outside sound through the microphones so you catch announcements and traffic. Use it for street walking, offices, and quick chats without removing earbuds. ANC for the flight, transparency for the street.
Follow these steps
- Learn what transparency does. The earbuds' outward microphones capture surrounding sound and play it into your ears mixed with your audio. You hear the world — announcements, traffic, voices — without removing anything.
- Learn how to toggle it. Most earbuds: press-and-hold a bud, or squeeze the stem. Most apps: a big obvious button. Learn the gesture once — fumbling at a crosswalk defeats the purpose.
- Use it for streets and transit. Walking, cycling (where legal), platforms, and airport gates: transparency keeps you oriented and safe while the music plays on.
- Use it for quick conversations. A colleague's question, a barista, a gate agent — one toggle instead of the pocket-the-buds dance. Many buds auto-pause the awareness when you speak.
- Adjust the level if you can. Some apps let you tune how much outside sound comes through. Full blast for traffic; a light touch for office awareness.
- Know it costs battery. The microphones and processing sip extra power — transparency drains faster than plain playback. Fine for outings; switch back to ANC or off for long flights.

What NOT to do
- Do not trust transparency for critical safety. It helps awareness, but it is processed audio with slight delay — still look both ways.
- Do not use full ANC on streets. Cancelling the world where the world can hit you is the exact wrong tradeoff.
- Do not forget wind noise. Transparency in strong wind can roar — many buds have a wind-reduction setting; use it.
- Do not leave it on all day unnecessarily. The battery cost is real; match the mode to the moment.
Frequently asked questions
Transparency vs ambient mode — different?
Same idea, different brand names. Transparency, ambient, hear-through — all pipe outside sound in.
Why does my voice sound weird?
You hear yourself partly through the mics, which sounds hollow. Normal — some apps offer sidetone tuning.
Does it work for phone calls?
Yes, and well — hearing your surroundings during calls feels natural instead of sealed-in.
